Vampires

By Dixie Williams. Real-life brothers Peter and Paul Moran play two kids hunting imaginary vampires around Merseyside, until flights of imagination, an obsession with old Hammer films shown on the telly late at night, and a cranky joke shop proprietor take things a step too far. “Don’t expect realism… you will have instead a distillation of the truth of children’s experience.” Not our words, the words of Fay Bloody Weldon. So think on.

Screen-grabbery:
Post-watershed hijinks The sort of poetic, throwaway image it no doubt took all day to shoot This scene, however, was probably less of a technical challenge
No fart powder till Tuesday Now you see, there's a bit of fun... .. and there's taking things a bit too far.

Made in Liverpool and filmed in Stanley Park and Anfield Cemetary, most of kids chosen to act were from English Martyrs boys and St Johns girls in Kirkdale.

This may have been based on an incident in the early 1950s in Glasgow. Several hundred children (armed with kitchen knifes, stones, etc) were found at one of the city’s graveyards. According to one of the police officers called to the scene, they said that they were looking for a ‘vampire with iron teeth’. This led to a government crack down on the selling of ‘horror comics’, ie graphic American adult ones to children.

A BBC Radio Scotland documentary, broadcast in 2010 did find a copy of a comic with a story of that title which would have been on sale at the time.

I remember this programme with great fondness…my Auntie Theresa played the part of Paul Shanes wife in the scene at the chippy. Wish we could find it to watch again. My Auntie would be made up to see it again.
