Radio 4: The Programmes

Woman’s Hour

RESURRECTED relic from the patronisingly-concieved scheduling of the forties, reinvented (barely) as Sue Macgregor-fronted hotchpotch of examination of current affairs from a ‘female’ slant, interviews with arts and crafts-toting eccentrics, and fifteen-minute drama inserts, ostensibly for ‘the mums’ but often sheepishly listened to by youngsters on account of appearances by the likes of Kenny Everett and, on one occasion, Blackadder and Baldrick in character. Still going, under the longterm supervision of Jenni Murray, though still yet to lose that horribly outdated name.

1973 to date??!! I remember it from years before that. 2pm on the Light Programme could only mean one thing…….Marjorie Anderson. The only reason I remember it was because it came straight after “Listen with Mother” with Daphne Oxenford and George Dixon.

They’ve expanded Woman’s Hour now to er, an hour.

Previously it was 45 minutes, with the last 15 minutes handed over to a drama.

And they’ve brought in Emma Barnett from 5 Live nowadays. Naga Munchetty (of starring alongside the ex Channel 5 newsreader on BBC Breakfast) has her old show now.

Given the 15 Minute Drama within Woman’s Hour was repeated at 7.45pm, they’ve pulled it from that slot and used the extra 15 minutes to expand Front Row.
