Radio 4: The Programmes

Sport On 4

SPORTSNIGHT-esque early morning magazine roundup of the week’s events for those dynamic thrusting Radio 4 listeners who like their sporting highlights neatly packaged in colour supplement-style bitesize chunks. Former rugby international Cliff Morgan and cricketing counterpart Tony Lewis were the primary anchormen, giving some indication of its usual sporting slant, and the none-more-incongruous discofied theme music was none other than The Shuffle by Van McCoy. Gamely tried to battle through the arrival of Radio 5 with a sort of proto-Red Button ‘extra’ on alternate frequencies, but soon wound up pretty much redundant.

I remember my Dad listening to it a lot in the 1980s, when the fluty disco of the The Shuffle made it even more of an out of place ear worm from my Dad’s Grundig.
