Earthsearch

The cast of Earthsearch. Smile! Oh, OK, don't then.SUB-BLAKE’S 7 beardy ‘space opera’ melodrama about the crew of the Challenger and their seemingly unending quest to find one of those time-honoured ‘new’ Earths you keep hearing about. Loads of faffing about with solar flares and sundry other vogueishly apocalyptic ‘intelligent sci-fi’ plot devices of the day, along with a weirdly ‘adult’ subplot about an adolescent girl raised by computers. Joss Whedon’s BBC Radio Collection box sets remain un-listened to, honest.

This shows up regularly on Radio 7 these days. The brayingly upper-middle-class accents of all concerned comes across a little gratingly now although the leisurely-pacing, old-fashioned sci-fi plot, lack of music and weirdly creepy atmosphere make it interesting listening. Series two introduced an irritating inevitably posh-voiced anally-retentive robot called “Tidy” for “comic” effect and listener irritation.

The sound effects from this series were included on the BBC Essential Sci-Fi Sound Effects disc.

I’ve just listened to this after a few years, It is quite atmospheric and still enjoyable but Darv’s ‘Surrey boy’ accent grate’s after a while.

Fortunately ended before the real Challenger exploded.
