Radio 4: The Programmes

Broadcasting House

Where the 'magic' happensRADIO 4’s sonic equivalent of a scurrilous classroom newsletter, masquerading as yet another current affairs slot but preferring to surreally lampoon politicians and scoff at the rest of the station’s output for being rubbish, and host competitions invariably offering a spoon as a prize, all the while cunningly hiding behind its bluff blokes-in-suits-talk-to-Lord-Hailsham name and getting away with it by virtue of being on a Sunday morning when nobody’s listening. Those doing the sniggering behind teacher’s back have included Eddie Mair, Fi Glover, Matthew Bannister and Paddy O’Connell.

I won a competition the prize of which was to review the newspapers on this show when it was helmed by Eddie Mair, I was rubbish, of course. And terrified. Eddie Mair was as brilliant as you would expect.

This is one of those shows that reminds you just how smug and annoying Radio 4 tends to be.

@ Barbersmith, you’ve taken the words right out of my mouth. Radio 4 comedy is usually something only someone who writes for a broadsheet or thinks they’re superior to anyone else would find amusing. Also I hate the smug superiority of a lot of Radio 4 listeners.
