Radio 2: The Shows

Sport On Two

SATURDAY afternoon sporting concoction of football, county cricket and the 3.15 from Chepstow, maintained throughout the eighties under the steady hand of Renton Laidlaw, golf correspondent of the Evening Standard, no less. Summer Sunday editions arrived in 1985 with Stuart Hall complementing your Sunday Grandstand fare of motorcycling and local tennis tournaments and never-that-smooth segueing between the last chorus of I Know Him So Well and the John Player League scoreboard. One of the finest Radio 2 themes of the lot, too, in that classic ‘jazzy march with too many piccolos’ seventies sports theme mould.

Would I be right in thinking the Count himself, Jim Rosenthal, got his break on here as a commentator and presenter?

A very classic & fitting sports theme, which has been used by at least 1 ILR station & probably 5 Live at sometime.

The 70’s seemed to a good time for sports themes, many of which are still in use.

The sports Report also seemed fitting, though dating back to the 40’s.

The Sunday version was called Sunday Sport and broadcast on Radio 2’s medium wave frequencies from May to September from 1985 to 1990. It’s not known if the show inspired the redtop tabloid’s name, but their idea of sport was rather different to the BBC’s.
