Radio 2: The Hosts

JAMESON, Derek

My Chief Scientist!“MORNIN’ MORNIN’, Jameson ‘ere!”. Unfortunately. Non-regular listeners must have got the impression the cabby sent to pick up the regular morning DJ had returned empty-handed and gone on air himself. Former tabloid editor and self-styled man of the people, forever droning on in his “bunker” about ver Great British Public. Lasted longer than Ken Bruce who preceded him and Brian Hayes who followed, mind. Later shunted off to late-nite Horlicksathon (yeah, we know what we said) with missus Ellen.

Used to relish doing the paper headlines (well he would wouldn’t he?). A story he didn’t like or questioned would be met with ‘What a load of old rubbish, I ask you’

My Dad didn’t really like hime but stuck with him during Terry Wogan’s exodus from the Radio 2 breakfast show.

Calling Alain Prost “Proost” seemed to be one of Derek’s odd habits.

Jameson’s other claim to fame was he helped launch The Daily Star. Who better to launch a rival to The Sun than someone who understood the mindset of tabloid readers, being from the same background, and made the paper into a reasonable success? In particular, Page 3 girls must be grateful to Jameson for providing them with another source of income as Starbirds.
