Radio 1: The Shows

Studio B15

SUNDAY AFTERNOON ‘do it yourself’ listener contribution-based music magazine, broadcast from the titular Studio B15, and presented by the late ADRIAN LOVE. Show’s content largely made up of interviews with the likes of Whitesnake by the likes of a schoolboy Terry Christian, while funnies came courtesy of STEPHEN FRY’S pastiche of Newsbeat, cunningly entitled Beatnews. Also home to many an audacious phone-in gambit, the most ridiculous guests including Marvin The Paranoid Android and Rod Hull & Emu.

Actually a brave attempt to make news and current affairs interesting for younger people along with the usual letters about why do mods hate punks and vice versa and when are Slade are going to make a new record. It was a shame Radio 1 ditched B15 as it covered far more issues than you would expect from the station and wasn’t just, as explained above, a music programme.

Studio B15 actually invited listening members of the public to do stuff on the show which
was totally radical. I was one of them it was awesome being part of it. Adrian chain-smoked his way through the show. It had a cool unpredictability. As for being a music show that was purely secondary. The discs were kept in a carrier bag and randomly selected.

it was, as they say, “sensational”. at least according to this fantastic session from The Jam. http://open.spotify.com/track/1VyS7Dk5JViTN2AqVKB9ih

It started in 1980, not 1981, and I can recall some interesting debates about conditions in prisons, youth unemployment and racism. Not that it was all serious stuff, there was a feature in 1980 about two bikers who were travelling across Europe and the occasional session by a contemporary music act. Also Adrian Love ended up on Radio 2 during the Frances Line era playing distinctly un hip acts like Mantovani.
