Radio 1: The Shows

Fun At One

Contains sketches by Ronnie Barker, Les Dawson, Tony Hancock and, apparently, Crystal TippsBURNETT-INSTIGATED lunchtime lafforama, involving little more than a short jingle and a track from the Secret Policeman’s Ball LP. Office worker entertainment on a budget!

About the only thing I can remember Paul Burnett for, that and turning in Glasgow in the late seventies and nearly losing it with a crowd who turned up for some Radio 1 Fun Day in Radio Clyde T shirts as some kind of ” go back to London” protest.

He used to do another feature where a lorry driver’s partner would give the lorry’s make, registration number and get a request for her ” knight of the road”. Seemed lorries played a big part in Paul Burnett’s career.

I’m sure Paul Burnette’s Fun At One was the first time I ever heard of Steve Martin . He played a live clip of Steve being a wild and crazy guy but had to fade it out when he mentioned lesbians . I didn’t physically see Steve Martin until his appearance on the Muppet Show and on Parkinson a bit later.

Steve Martin released a few songs early in his career, including King Tut which has been on a few novelty song compilations especially the Dr Demento ones.

I hope they played Steve Martin’s “pussy” routine, which has a hilarious punchline. No, too rude.

Burnett’s other big claim to fame was his show announced the new Top 40 every Tuesday, which boosted his ratings among teenagers and schoolkids hanging around their radios, and made him very important to younger Radio 1 listeners. Otherwise among the welly boot era DJs people remember, few will recall Paul Burnett as he largely vanished from national radio after he was ditched from Radio 1 40 years ago.

The last time I saw Paul Burnett on TV was as a guest on The James Whale Show in the early 90’s. He’d lost most of his hair and wore big Christopher Biggins style glasses which made him look like Reg Holdsworth from Corrie.

@ Droogie, do you recall his second attempt at a comedy hit with Lean, Butch, Mean and On Screen about the Rambo film, where he dressed up as Rambo on the cover and it sold about three copies? Poor old PB, he tried his hand as a stand in on Radio 2 a few times and probably hoped for a full time gig, but Frances Line came in and he was too modern for her tastes so was never invited back.
