FIRST female jock on Radio 1, cheerful big sister archetype turned largerette dance guru, though most famously Cream Era-wise in the post-Top Forty Sunday evening request slot; sprinkling of light indie – The Smiths, New Order and Love Cats yet again – requested by kids busily dashing off last-minute homework or, during the season, last-minute chemistry revision, while Annie dusted down the anecdotes, dispensed advice for ‘growing’ teens, said ‘Hi’ at a perma-unguessable point of the first record, and cued up that bloody Fish Heads song for the tenth time. Far better than most of her male contemporaries, and still to be found in small hours ‘chillout’ slot.

She sounds like Pauline Fowler now on the odd time I hear her. Yet in her heyday in the seventies and eighties better than many of the men on Radio 1 and a well loved DJ.

Sad to say she passed away yesterday and was the longest serving Radio 1 DJ of all time, with a career stretching back to the year The Beatles split up( 1970). While she was never one for nostalgia and kept evolving like John Peel, you could say Anne played everything at Radio 1 from the latest one by Jethro Tull to an ambient dance mix. My first encounter with her radio wise was her Sunday afternoon request show in 1979 where she unashamedly played post punk and ska for her more knowing listenership, something I doubt someone like Simon Bates would do with much enthusiasm.
