Radio 1: The Jocks

LAMACQ & WHILEY

What was their favourite band - Sole II Sole?! UNLIKELY combination of trend-cyncial music journo Steve Lamacq and woman who booked the bands for The Word Jo Whiley beat off stiff competition – including Mark Radcliffe and Richard Easter – to become the Goodier-replacing new hosts of The Evening Session, luckily for them arriving just in time to surf Britpop-instigated waves of listener interest. Yet where Goodier could be described as ‘square’ even by the bands he featured sessions by, Lamacq & Whiley were too laid-back and too ‘cool’ respectively to get as audibly excited about the music as he did, being more interested in live dates and ‘multiple formats’ and what have you. As a result, stuck around after Session-ousting on predictable ‘serious presenter’ ticket, Lamacq doing mainly documentary stuff and Whiley presenting over lunchtime muso-fest The Live Lounge.

Her time had most certainly come, along with Mr Lamacq’s, as they joined the station just as it was ridding itself of people like DLT and Bannisterism was taking over. Promotion to lunchtime slot in 1997 occured at the height of Radio 1’s near Stalinist obsession with new music and she became the high priestess of cutting edge indie. Might not have attrracted the sort of audience figures Gary Davies had in this slot, but she was just right for the Radio 1 of that era which wanted to be completely cutting edge. However, 2 years later Britpop was dead, dance was the big thing again, but she survived the move to more populist fare by being a respected muso.

Wonder how Jo Whiley would have done if she joined Radio 1 in 1988 rather than 1993. No, Jo, none of that indie rubbish please, now your role is to act as a bit of eye candy for Steve Wright and say how wonderful he is every 5 minutes. We might give you a show at 6am on Sundays when everyone is in bed if you behave.

Lurpak did the Session solo for the last two or three of those years, of course, while Whiley presided over the sandwich slot. That was my GCSE period, the last time I listened to Radio 1 regularly.

Would that be Jo ‘hiya’ Whiley then?

Lamacq is the only DJ I’ve ever heard of who’s had to miss a set of shows through being called up for jury service. Much as Jo looks a bit like Sarah Cracknell in that picture, by the way, Steve put an early publicity photo of the two on his blog the other day in which, despite boasting a full head of hair and considerably less thousand yard-like stare, he looked about twenty years older than he does now.

    Hello Simon
She looks very much like a female indie fan from that early to mid nineties era, Docs, straggly hair, serious expression. Wonder if she attended many demos outside the student union as she always gave me the impression that she would have done.

You make that sound like a negative!

Anyway, just here to find pictures of Steve Lamacq looking like Gollum, and as specimens go that’s a rubbish one.
