Fascinating discussion about a fascinating programme – I saw it when they repeated it a few years ago.

You’re right, nowadays it would be called Dave Allen Meets the Unfortunate Men Maliciously Suspected of Being Paedophiles. Eccentricity has been bastardised, and is now either suspicious or relegated to those people ranting against the BBC or insisting coronavirus is germ warfare, that sort of thing.

Ivor Cutler might double as an honorary Englishman, considering he couldn’t get away from Scotland fast enough.

The closest person we have to a great English eccentric now is a woman, funnily enough, Miriam Margolyes, who has been elevated to national treasure status. She’s very reassuring in that way.
