TV Cream Stays Indoors With Miles Chapman

Another from our lockdown podcast series.

Miles Chapman stays indoors in Hitchin in Hertfordshire. There, he watches episode one of TV’s original ‘docu-soap’ The Family (https://bit.ly/TVCIndoors03), and then tells TV Cream all about it.

If you don’t want to listen to it using our player (above), then download it (25.7 MB).

Other ways to listen are Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify and this is our RSS feed.

And here it is on Soundcloud…

The Family theme tune was by “Mr Brooks”, whoever that was, and is on the excellent CD compilation Magpie from a few years ago. It does sound like a poltergeist is about to descend on a 1970s council house.

It has a vaguely Italian sound, like something from the more psychedelic gialli.

I had that cool Magpie compilation with The Family theme on too. It must’ve been out early 2000’s because we used to play it in the bookshop I was working in at the time. I’d love seeing the look of absolute bafflement on customer’s faces whenever the Peter Wyngarde track Neville Thumbcatch came on.

“And on and on and on ON ON ON!” You can get the whole of that Peter Wyngarde album on CD now, and you don’t need me to tell you that it should not be played in public.

There were a few compilations of TV related music around that time, but a lot seemed to only be in print for a short time.

Girl in a Suitcase was one that I missed, along with a collection of schools interlude music.

Luckily the Dr Who related compilation was around a bit longer, & I managed to collect some others over the years. As Seen On TV was good for having the full Bread theme & some other rarities.

I have the Girl in a Suitcase one, it’s excellent – the full Kick Start theme! Rock out with the Angels theme tune!

Very true, especially as I was born just too late to experience it first hand & remember any of it.

If you want to buy a copy of Girl in a Suitcase, be prepared to pay at least high double figures for a 2nd hand copy.

Indeed . One of the weird things about the Wyngarde album (and there are many) is how the back cover of the original LP shows him with his back to camera whilst stood at a urinal. This was rather spooky and prophetic seeing how his career would nosedive after an incident in a gents lavatory shortly after.

That’s the same 1970s sense of humour that brought us the poster of the tennis player scratching her bum and underpants with slogans on them. The past is truly another country.
