Creamguide (Films) Commentaries: Moonraker

Recorded on the evening of Monday 22 May, here’s our unintentional, but nonetheless fulsome, tribute to the mighty Sir Roger Moore. We’ve added a new bit at the beginning – a Bondian pre-title sequence, if you will where we reflect on one of Britain’s greatest ever film stars – but the rest is as it was recorded.

So consider this your re-entry into the urbane world of Sir Roger Moore.  Relax in the company of Chris, Craig and Jack as they rank the best Bond baddies, rank the best Bond haircuts and – of course rank the best Bond Bonds.

And as a special bonus for all readers, here is a signed photograph of Roger with a dedication made out to Creamguide (Film)’s Craig:

    Lovely tribute there, Chris.
My favourite Bond too. Moonraker I forgot to mention the first DVDs I got were Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker.
My gran had the same draught excluders.

    1. Sir Miles Messervy
    2. Johnny Mathis recorded a demo too.
    3. Boothroyd.
    4. Simon Raven wrote OHMSS.
    5. She’s also the victim in Death in the Nile, and has a cameo in For Your Eyes Only.
    6. Lonsdale’s in Munich, Ronin, Smiley’s People lots of stuff, 236 credits on imdb, raised on the Channel Islands.
    7. Surprisingly, he hasn’t died yet. He’s 97.
    8. Glen did FYEO. Gilbert did You Only Live Twice, Spy and Moon.
    9. Gorgo, shot in Ireland too.
    10. Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager.
    11. Sheryl Crow did Tomorrow Never Dies, KD lang the end credits for TND. Goldeneye’s end credits was by its composer, Eric Serra, bloody awful.
    12. I brought it to your attention it was Danielle on twitter, not her daughter.
    13. He’s in lots of stuff, Kiel, playing a metal-toothed thug in Silver Streak before Spy, and a rare lead in the Humanoid alongside Moonraker’s Corinne Clery, Barbara Bach and a robot dog.

Chiles is not in FYEO but the first Austin Powers. My mistake.

Moonraker, of course is utter nonsense, but I remember seeing it and it was the first Bond film I’d ever experienced and I was blown away with at the time. “His name is Jaws. He kills people.” And then Jaws somehow seems to defy gravity and jumps from one Brazilian cable car to another. My favourite moment is when Drax picks up the phone and dials the Henchman Direct Hotline and the next thing you know he’s trying to kill Bond in Egypt. As I said, it is utter nonsense, but it’s tremendous fun at the same time. And why not?

Most of the Moore era films verge on silly but are still an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

The skydive & space station scenes are some of my favourite 007 moments.

Connery & Craig are better if you like your Bond serious, with Dalton & Brosnan somewhere in between.
