franklinOne of those actresses often described as having a ‘disappointing’ career, meaning that after her pre-adult film roles of increasing skill (culminating in the razor-sharp Sandy in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) she was pushed into the career oubliette of horror. This is a slight on both the genre and Franklin herself, as any close study of And Soon the Darkness, The Legend of Hell House and, OK, maybe not Satan’s School for Girls, will clearly show.

FINEST HOUR: Juvenile and horror roles combined as Pamela led the adult-free household in creepy family meltdown study Our Mother’s House.

I do recommend you get a DVD of The Legend of Hell House, where she plays an excellent role as a medium possesed by the spirit of a dead madman modelled on Aleister Crowley. Also it is a notable film for a cameo of Peter Bowles playing a very upper crust lawyer in the credits.

I think it was the decision to move into US series television that scuppered her career, more than the horror movies, which were successful (she had quite a few fans). She turned 70 this year, if you want to feel old.
