That’ll Be The Day

It’s not really a glam film, is That’ll, being set in the ’50s, but it does come from David Puttnam’s Goodtimes Enterprises, who did plenty of good work in this field, and there’s another cameo from Ringo Starr, as dodgem car attendant and mentor to David Essex’s wannabe rock star. There’s also Billy Fury as Stormy Tempest, Keith Moon as, er, Keith Moon, Robert Lindsay, Vivian Stanshall and Karl Howman among the names to look for, all set against a bleak Isle of Wight landscape, with woodbines and squalid caravan sex adding to the Byrite-budget grimness.

Oh no it doesn’t, it features Deborah “Victoria from Dr Who” Watling. Wendy is in Blood on Satan’s Claw.

Sorry, I knew it was someone who had been in Dr Who.

Stardust, I can watch time and time again and never get bored, but That’ll Be the Day is just tedium to me.

I remember rubbing one out to the scene where Essex gets his leg over Deborah Watling. Astonishing, really, because everything about that scene is horribly bleak – the cramped and crappy chalet, the sound of drunks wandering past outside and babies crying, Deborah suddenly panicking and saying ‘You won’t tell anyone, will you?’, and of course Essex blows his yolk after about thirty seconds. It’s as redolent of British dinge as Monty Withnail’s speech about a cat, rain, Vim under the sink and both bars on. Suppose in the pre-internet era, randy teenagers had to play the hand they were dealt (ooh bloody err), which might also explain the startling number of people who pleasured themselves to the sex scenes in Rita, Sue and Bob Too.
