Terminator, The

How come no-one mentions this film when debating the Precise Point Hollywood Films Went Crap? Anyway, there’s nothing left to say about this that hasn’t already been mulled over at great length on your shiny new region one DVD special edition box set extras disc, although we feel what’s missing from these big budget sci-fi releases is a heckling commentary by Tom Baker, which would certainly be the ‘killer app’ to make us get a DVD player. Baker commentating on Alien during a cinema screening – “I mean for God’s sake, stop walking around the spaceship like bloody estate agents! Why don’t they all go down the hole and just bore it to death?” See? It’d be brilliant.

One film that couldn’t be more mid 1980s in style even if it tried.

In the scenes set in the 21st century wasteland, where does the resistance get its petrol from or any cars in working order, considering America has been destroyed in a nuclear war? However, a minor quibble as the film is a masterpiece and cleverly written and Linda Hamilton is excellent as the gormless, inept waitress Sarah Connor who manages to defeat the Terminator.

Considering it was made on a shoestring budget the end result very impressive for the time.

It helps it was made before Arnie was too self parodying, so he played the Terminator with real menace being as smart as he is strong.

Supposedly James Cameron originally wanted to set the whole thing in the future but couldn’t raise the money to do it, so came up with the idea to transport the main characters to the present day to make it film-able on the money he did have.
