Romeo and Juliet

Here you get a chance to relive that double-period English class when the big telly and Videostar were wheeled out for a showing of Zeferelli’s shafts-of-light and wispy gauze take on the Bard, with Milo ‘Me Mammy’ O’Shea, Michael ‘Logan’ York and Bruce ‘Withnail’ Robinson.

People’s mothers tended to like it, though.

Remember being shown this on the old Videostar in my 4th Form English Lit class. Seeing the beautiful Olivia Hussey as Juliet and her in a brief topless bedroom scene no doubt stayed with many a schoolboy of my generation. The only other things I remember about this movie were the usual out of synch dubbing you get with Italian movies in the English language, and that the theme song was later used for Our Tune with Simon Bates.

Supposedly Paul McCartney was considered for Romeo.

By chance Laurence Olivier was in Rome when it was being filmed & visited the studios, & Zeffirelli offered him the chance to narrate it.
