Ya got trouble, reckons Robert Preston in this always-welcome vintage conman musical romp. Of course, Paul ‘Biiiilkoooo!’ Ford is in full voice in this as Mayor Shinn. Elsewhere it’s trouble and trombones in more or less equal amounts, for the River City people (there’s another blasted pop-film reference) as they become hoodwinked by the smooth-talking intruder. It’s all joyfully theatrical – the sets look as indoorsy as anything, with those rich, rudy Technicolors only adding to the artificiality. And of course, the cast take a curtain call in reverse pecking order at the end, as is only right.
