How To Murder Your Wife

Jack Lemmon is great in this light-hearted tale of escaping from a drunken accidental marriage, as is Terry-Thomas as his butler. But for us, his ex-flatmate Matthau’s Guide For The Married Man just shades it in swinging sexcom terms.

I loved this film as a kid because Lemmon plays a comic-strip artist, which was my dream job when I grew up ( I liked watching Robert Gillespie in sitcom Keep It In The Family too for the same reason.) I watched the film again recently and it drags a bit, with an overlong courtroom scene. The comic artwork of Lemmon’s action hero comic strip Bash Brannigan drawn for the movie by artist Mel Keefer is fabulous though.

I find this a slightly annoying film because of poor Claire Trevor, sublime in Stagecoach, reduced to the shrewish wife role here. Although the stunning Virna Lisi is some compensation – ay caramba!
