Hello, Dolly!

Gene Kelly gets behind the camera for this slightly wobbly tale of Babs Streisand out to ensnare grumpy demi-millionaire Walter Matthau (they hated each other on set, Hollywood spat fans!) enlisting hapless shop assistant Michael Crawford along the way. Best bit is It Takes a Woman, with Walter Matthau leading the male chorus in the fine art of the Manly Dance, which entails firmly grasping your waistcoat lapels, putting on a grumpy face and rhythmically stomping from side to side. One for the buffs: Stanley Donen turned down the chance to direct Hello Dolly! to do Bedazzled instead, and his fee for the former would have been more than the entire budget of the latter. C’est interessant, no? Oh, no. Oh, well then…
