Go-Between, The

Betrothed Victorian maid Julie Christie and dandy Alan Bates conduct a clandestine affair via titular messenger Dominic Guard, who grows up to become Michael Redgrave. Timeshifting script by one H Pinter, choking period trimmings by Joseph Losey, and BAFTAs all round. Widely held as the one film Forbes can point at and go ‘There, you see? Worthwhile in the end, wasn’t it?’

Actually, Alan Bates wasn’t a dandy in this, he was a farmer–who looked way too much like Ringo Starr. Didn’t play the drums or sing “Act Naturally,” alas.
