Carry On Abroad

“Ah, Mr. Farkyharse!” Yep, it’s the unfairly-maligned ‘satirical’ package holiday from hell routine, with wet cement, hot zoops, backless wardrobes, floods, ‘love potions’ and great performances from Peter Butterworth and Hattie Jacques as the staff (aided by Ray ‘Benn’ Brooks). Charles Hawtrey character name of the week: Eustace Tuttle. Non-regulars include June ‘I tried it once and didn’t like it’ Whitfield, Jimmy ‘Mad Death’ Logan, Carol ‘Kerril’ Hawkins and Patsy ‘wedge open a fire door’ Rowlands. And never fear, Jack Douglas is on hand with an unsteady pint at Sid’s pub for the finale.

Possibly ‘ THE’ best carry-on movie ever!

As a nice counterpoint to the oft-heard rumours that he and Sidney James didn’t get along, Kenneth Williams noted in his (published) diaries that during the shoot for Carry On Abroad (which took place entirely at Pinewood Studios and the surrounding areas), filming was suspended by a sudden downpour, so he and Sid took shelter in a caravan – where they traded anecdotes about what an insufferable arsehole the late Tony Hancock had been, including a startling anecdote from Sid regarding Matt Monro, which I shall leave to the reader to discover for themselves.

Kenneth Williams does indeed provide evidence that the story was at least current long before it appeared in print when all concerned were dead; it’s possible Sid heard it from Matt Monro himself. Whether or not true of course is another matter (Sid as I recall took it as evidence of how mixed up the alcoholic Hancock had become). Sid James and Kenneth Williams did not like each other at all, but they had in common being badly treated by Hancock, although both were fairly forgiving about it in public.
