We don’t care how many technical feats were achieved with the camera lenses and lighting, this is Kubrick Does Period Drama Starring Ryan O’Neal, and anyone excited by that prospect may want to consider donating their eyes to someone who’ll appreciate them more. Film critic Stanley Kauffmann, reviewing the film, noted that if your nine-year old nephew Herbie had been given the sort of money to play around with that Stanley had, he could have imitated 18th-century paintings, too. As for O’Neal, any five minutes of his semi-regular gig as the heroine’s father on BONES is better than his earnest plodding here.
