Karaoke Challenge

You're better off with Gaychat, to be frankThe introduction of moneyraking 0898 numbers in the late ’80s wasn’t entirely restricted to shabby chatlines at the outset – this service offered callers the chance to sing badly into the receiver so that others may call up, listen, and titter aimlessly. But then again it was, as the blanket Channel 4 advertising unimpressively claimed, “your chance to be… famous on the phone!” Which is the best euphemism for ‘unknown’ we’ve yet come across.

There were a few 0898 information lines, such as Cubcall, which would give you the latest going ones at your favourite football club,

One problem with these services was they would play in a loop, so if you didn’t the phone down they would continue playing for hours, leading to an Adrian Mole sized phone bill & parental uproar.

There were also some touchtone based interactive games, I’ve heard of a Doctor Who one in the early 1990s.
