TV Cream

A bit of business

TV Cream’s ‘bits’ emporium now open

"Window, whistle, woggle - they all begin with the sound 'Wuh!'TV Cream has opened another, brand new section.

So what’s in it? Well, it’s a a mixed bag, a random mixture of items… a kind of pot pourri if you will, cataloguing those uncataloguable elements that are, in some way, ‘Creamy’. Titled ‘Bric-a-Brac’ (and you can click through to it in the menu above) it’s here you’ll find a tribute to Wimpy Bars, the Shatterproof ruler typeface, food awareness campaigns and the I-Spy books, among other things.

All are laid out in that now familar A-Z style, although, sadly we don’t have Brian Cant available tobusk  some alphabetically-themed whimsy alongside the items in our emporium.

So, what other stuff should we be stocking up on? School visits to the local nature reserve? Smelly rubbers? Stencil rulers? Other stuff not just beginning with S? Please add your suggestions in the ol’ comments box.

Desks with plastic drawers that if you pressed your legs against just so, would open when you leaned back on your chair.

The ‘Nice Cold Ice Cold Milk’ marketing campaign of 1984 – at one point seemingly every cafe and launderete seemed to have one of the stickers in it’s window, often lingering on well into the 90s..

The ‘Mortgage Corporation’ TV ads fronted by Barry Norman, of all people..

The ‘Data 70’ font that seemed to be used on all sci-fi programmes in the 70s..

I’d have added peanut ‘Treets’ but they’re back on the market – fantastic!

Long-gone ice creams – anyone else remember Funny Faces, Jumbo, and King Biscuit?

PS – Dave, great work with the milk sign! I’m no techie, but I’ve never seen a ‘sign zoom’ done like that before – I’m impressed!

What about that not-very-convincing “erasable ballpoint” – the one with the rubber on the end?

I think it was called Paper:Mate Replay, though I believe there was also one on the market from another manufacturer…

As always from TV Cream, a damn good read, but one shop which most high streets had was Radio Rentals. Get a good as new colour television for only £ 7.99 a month, the adverts told you, in the papers and in the shop windows. Now that the prices of new televisions have fallen so much, and the sets are so much more reliable, renting a television has become a thing of the past and Radio Rentals shops have long gone, along with such familiar TV rental shops from the seventies as Granada, DER, Visionhire, British Relay and Multi Broadcast.
