First of Alan Bleasdale’s post-Black Stuff (qv) character studies. Pete Postlethwaite runs a failing building contractor’s, and resorts to sub-gangster thuggery to keep the business afloat. Counted by Bleasdale as ‘the best thing ever done in my name,’ it cracks along at a rollicking pace, punctuated by ironic photo montages of Postlethwaite’s misadventures to pop hits, subtitled things like ‘Market Forces’, ‘Slumps and Booms’ and ‘Final Demands’. The other plays in the series, detailing the lives of his former employees, formed The Boys from the Blackstuff.
