Didn’t Justin have an unsettlingly posh voice?

Nothing could match The Hill in its first six series.

I recall watching the episode in which Gripper was finally expelled for a grim catalogue of bullying, harassment and demanding money with menaces. Hooray! There was an another episode in which Mr Baxter and Miss Lexington had a row as direct result of Stewpot being attacked by Mr Hicks. Baxter swore revenge against Hicks for doing bugger all other than being a flipping headcase by making him slip on a wet floor. Stewpot and his mother told Mrs McCluskey that they were intent on taking legal action against Hicks on his stupidity and Baxter then told Bridget the Midget, Mrs Stewart and Stewpot that Hicks would be walking. Hooray!

This was a staple on Australia’s ABC.

    My impressions?

IF Grange Hill was an accurate depiction of British government schools, this made me all the more thankful for schools in my country. Most here are located on large bits of land, with grass playing fields, and plenty of trees for shade.

P.S. I once watched a special about “The Making of Grange Hill.’ I learned that the ‘school’ was actually the BBC Television Centre.

Bumping up this post by Scott, the interior scenes were mostly done in the Television Centre, but exterior shots featured real schools in Kingsbury, Willesden and Fulham until series 9, when Grange Hill moved to Elstree Studios( next door to Eastenders). The BBC offices resembled a comprehensive school, so these were used for the exterior and some interior shots, and using Borehamwood for the scenes outside the school was easier than filming on busy London streets.

The storyline when Grange Hill merged with Rodney Bennett & Brookdale Schools was to allow a changeover of exterior locations.

“Just say no” – by all accounts, a lot of the cast didn’t and ended up in rehab.
