The Godfather of Ulster Punk
11.30, BBC Radio 4
It’s remarkable how many ace bands came from Northern Ireland during the punk era, not just because there were some rather obvious distractions but because it was incredibly hard to get yourself heard, with no bands touring, no venues to play, the charts not including sales from the province, virtually no radio shows and a couple of tiny record labels operating from people’s back bedrooms. Much of its success is down to the tireless efforts of Terri Hooley who helped the likes of The Undertones make it big.
