The best bit of the whole European Championships, by the way, was when Matt Smith invited Jamie Carragher to reflect on Andriy Voronin’s chequered career at Liverpool and Carragher was clearly far more candid than Smith had anticipated, calling him a “lazy bugger”. ITV have been pretty good this tournament – we also liked Chiles’ breezy “So, an England win?” being met with Roy Keane’s “I don’t think so, no” – but we don’t know why that should be a surprise when most of the team has been poached from the BBC anyway, and the problem is that when next season comes around they’ll be back to having to cram all the discussion in two minutes around a million ad breaks. We’re billing this even though the EPG suggests it’s the 1982/83 series, as last seen about six weeks ago, because there’s the chance they might have got it wrong and it’s the other series covering 1978/79 instead. You’d hope.
