Gorgo

Deep sea stop motion monster crock which used to suffer terribly in the ’80s when ITV interspersed it with the far superior ‘he’s eating everything in his path!’ Chewits ads. Bill ‘Born Free’ Travers and Martin ‘Vogon Captain’ Benson are on board for jerky fun.

Whadaya on about? Gorgo wasn’t a stop motion monster! It was a bloke in a monster suit filmed in slow motion like the Godzilla movies. Are you sure it was used in the Chewits ads?

I saw this on holiday as a 6 year old and was stunned at the special effects bringing Gorgo to the screen, they were the most convincing I’d ever seen. Watched the repeat a few years later and was still amazed. Amazed that I could have thought the whole thing was superbly done, that is. It was a similar feeling to watching The Horns of Nimon and thinking it wasn’t very good, whereas previously all Doctor Who had been great for me. The end of innocence, etc.

Made in colour, when a large percentage of British films were in black and white, and a classic for people who love monster films. Always remember Gorgo’s mother turning up trampling a large part of London, being immune to cannon and missile fire from RAF jets, and an Irish kid who tells people taking Gorgo to London was a mistake and being ignored. Sort of has a happy ending when Gorgo and his mother reunite and disappear into the sea.
