Now here’s a real TV Cream obsession – the opening titles from mid ’80s BBC1 Sunday night centrepiece Big Deal, starring Ray “I’ll Keep It, Just To Help Me Remember” Brooks as improbably-named card sharp Robby Box, and Sharon Duce as his “long suffering” other half, Jan. Featuring heart-searing power pop from trilby-wearing Bucks Fizzer-in-chief, Bobby “G”, and a load of cards and fivers going down the drain (enduring image, isn’t it?).

For the full ‘Deal’ experience, click here to see the Gubby perform the track on Pebble Mill, watched by Brooks, Duce and Josephine “Take Two” Buchan pretending to play poker. “Ah well, big deal!”

“…your mum’s in arrears so the council will call!” Presenting the titles from BBC1′s late ’80s Friday night trainee copathon, Rockliffe’s Babies. Featuring one of the McGanns who wasn’t Doctor Who, Martyn Ellis as the great PC Paul Giorgiou (“Get us a pork pie and a sachet of brown sauce, will you?”), that theme tune and, of course, a van with the name of the show written on it in dust. Ace.

After two series of hot-headed crime-fighting and disorientating camerawork, the BBC in their wisdom decided that what we liked most about the show was Rockliffe, not the ‘Babies’ (wrong) and so gave the maroon anorak-clad mentor his own Wednesday night spin-off, the dull Rockliffe’s Folly, broadcast in an all-too resistible double-header (well, Reg Holdsworth was up to his tricks over on ITV) with Season 25 of Doctor Who.

Very little to say about this Fax alternating pre-The Six seat warmer starring Sally Struthers and Burgess Meredith – which spun-off from All in the Family – other than: “La-la la-la la-la la-la la-la la-la laa, la la-la la-la la-la la la la la-la, la la la la-lah”

Nothing says ITV at 8pm on a Wednesday night quite like the image of a silhouette of Julia McKenzie playing the drums and tossing a pancake, while Anton Rodgers reclines in a rocking chair, does it?
