It’s eight o’clock and next on Thames, new comedy as Julia McKenzie and Anton Rodgers search for those… Fresh Fields!
In full, here’s the first instalment of the quintessential ITV gin-belt sitcom. No pancake tossing in silhoutte here, mind, as it’s the premiere episode, so there’s a helpful orientation sequence, showing how those crazy Fields live their lives, accompanied by the full-length version of that ace rowdy-parpy tune.
Do keep watching, not just for the most stereotypical sitcom happening ever (leaving the shopping on the roof of someone else’s car… with hilarious consequences!) and a neat throwaway reference to the show’s title (“most men who go wandering off in search of fresh fields come back to their first love”) but also for a restaurant bearing what’s come to be known at TVC Towers as ‘the Five-Centres font’.
And yes, Teddington Lock’s answer to Cosmo Kramer is in there too. “I’ll have a small one!”
